Do you want new furniture or beautiful, comfortable spaces?
Furniture shopping can be a fun and exciting experience. We believe that furnishing a home beautifully is an art that requires some foresight, like that which a good architect brings to his or her client. Most consumers will see nice pieces in the showroom and fall in love with them. They might foresee a picture of a room in the mind’s eye and think certain pieces will be just perfect. Then they will buy one or several sets to simply line the rooms of their home with new furniture. What often results from this common scenario falls far short of fulfilling that previous vision.
Would you prefer a room filled with quality furniture or an intimate seating area complimented with the perfect area rug? Perhaps your family room or great room offers space for two unique sitting areas; one focused around an entertainment center and one for quiet conversation and relaxed reading.
Then there is the need to properly size things for the available space. Measuring and planning in three dimensions, not just the foot print, is crucial to spatial orientation, fit and feng shui. These are the kinds of considerations discerning homeowners keep in mind before rushing out to the showroom.
Color me… neutral or bold?
It’s important to think through colors as well. Fabrics and leathers have relatively limited color selections so your new furniture choices may influence exactly what paint colors to use for your walls, trim and perhaps highlights. The nice thing about paint is that color choices are practically unlimited so whatever your furniture, carpeting and rug color choices are, you’ll easily find the right paints to compliment them.
Benjamin Moore recently released its Color Trends 2014 Microsite. This trending color palette which guides their updated custom color formulations is based primarily on what they describe as “…a reaction to all the color cues that we have noticed popping up in the home furnishing industry… textiles, carpets, wallpapers, tabletops and pottery…” As you can see, the home furnishing industry has considerable influence on trending colors chosen by one of the world’s foremost authorities on color. The cues they are seeing tend toward pastels – but not too “candy or Easter egg.” There’s a shift away from gray to more blues, greens, lavenders and pinks.
As you can conjure from how furnishings can set the tone for the look and feel of your home, choosing your ideal furniture is a task to be taken seriously. If you’re of a mind to work with creative professionals for designing and building out your home’s interior, you may also want to consider working with your designer to assure that your furniture selections help create more livable spaces, not just fill in those spaces.
