Setting the Mood and Tone with Windows

sunroom-widow-treatmentImagine if the rooms in your home had no windows. Not a very comforting image is it? Windows are fundamentally critical elements of designing interior spaces because they are gates to the natural light or darkness of the world outside.

Adding a new window can transform a dim, unused space into a cheerful reading nook or favorite spot to peer out at the view. How you dress or treat your windows can make a big difference in the look, feel and mood of your home’s interior.

As remodelers, it’s always fun to cut holes in walls, rearrange framing and install a new bay or picture window. However, simply working with existing windows by using the amazing treatment options available is less disruptive and can make a huge difference in both lighting and room appearance.

Homeowners are looking for more ways to dress windows as traditional curtains and drapes are making way for sheers & shadings, Roman shades, vertical & horizontal blinds, kitchen-window-treatmentshutters, pleated shades, woven woods and beautiful innovative new fabrics. Available remote control electronic shades, blinds and shutters allow instant privacy and natural light adjustments from the comfort of your chair. Some of today’s innovative product features allow you to deflect and redirect sunlight or ambient daylight just where you want.

Hunter Douglas is one of the leading designers and manufacturers of window dressing products. They offer dazzling new materials and fabrics as well as technologies to improve privacy and light control. Other innovative manufacturers include Levelor, Bali and Graber. Many of the newer window dressing products have insulation qualities and passive solar control features, improving a home’s energy efficiency. Beautiful fabrics, woods, organic and synthetic materials, all in variable colors are available for the choosing.

While Hunter Douglas is in the business of selling these products, consider for a minute the authenticity about what they say regarding the importance of windows when designing a home’s interior. “Great design is beautiful to live with, provides variable light control, insulates rooms against heat and cold while saving energy, protects your furnishings from damaging UV rays, and even absorbs sound, improving the acoustics in a room.” This is by no means a promotion for one brand of window treatments but we feel this statement accurately sums up the impact of window designs on your home.

With so many design options and style choices available, it makes sense to first narrow down the type of window dressing that suits you best. Draperies or blinds, vertical or horizontal, sheer, translucent or opaque, layers…? From there, you can move on toWindow-drapery-fabrics materials, textures and colors.

One of the nice things about window dressing is its dynamic nature. You can significantly change the look and feel of rooms by changing up the window treatments from time to time, even seasonally. As style trends change, so can your windows without any major “under construction” disruption.

  1. I think some windows are little easier to switch up the dressing than others. If you’ve got a heavy shutter (which would be expensive to replace) or large full-wall windows like the room in the top picture of the article, it’s going to be a bit of an undertaking. That said, I love what you’re doing here! Especially that awning over the kitchen window — looks awesome!

  2. I agree that the way your wedding look in your home can make or break the appearance. It is so many different ways to achieve the look you want. I am in the middle of redoing my home and the windows are on my to do list.
